I had the pleasure of supplying 16 portraits of famous literary figures in the guise of dogs for “Classic Poetry for Dogs: Why Do I Chase Thee.” The talented Jessica Swaim expertly expands on my series concept Literary Pets series trading cards with her own hilarious character bios. In addition, the book is filled with her outrageously clever poems with a decidedly canine twist. She has a wonderful talent for crafting puns. Published and beautifully packaged by Gibbs Smith, it’s 88 pages of fur-faced fun for dog and poetry lovers alike.
It’s the last weekend of holiday shopping before Christmas at this year’s Blue Genie Art Bazaar. ChetArt is represented with signed prints, card sets, coloring books and nightlights. Shop from 140+ artists in this unique venue through Dec. 24th.

Olafur Eliasson recreates an intricate version of his home with a series of laser cut pages gathered into a 908 page book. A “tome with a view,” if you will.
Join me along with dozens of great artists for this month’s Austin Flea. The setting is the fantastic Spider House Ballroom located at 2906 Fruth St. Featuring a performance by HoneyPunch, the event runs from 11-5.
This weekend marks the 2nd annual summer show event hosted by Austin Craft Riot. 70 vendors anchor 2 days of art, music and food trucks at the Austin Music Hall.
ChetArtwill be represented with a booth full of signed prints, card sets, books and more.
San Diego Comic Con 2013 was a great experience with high energy fun, over the top creativity every where you looked and record breaking sales for us. We enjoyed seeing our fellow Small Press vendors from years back and meeting many new creatives. We had lots of return buyers and fans visit us and purchase some new offerings, along with a visit from Bob Leeper of Nevermore Evermore (see his Nerdvana Comic Con reporting HERE) and Don Thompson of Blurppy fame. We enjoyed a surprise visit from our good friend David Patton and his family and he was kind enough to take a picture of us in our booth. (above) Celebrity sightings were sparse, but did see Stan Lee signing across the aisle from us and Molly C. Quinn wandering by and posing for fan pictures. Frankly, we kept our heads down so much with transactions there’s no telling who may have walked by the main aisle next to us. We were proud and happy to see and sell alongside our great fellow Small Press friends Dane, Ashley and John of Monkey Minion Press, Paul Horn of Cool Jerk, Matt of Mincing Mockingbird, Ryan Claytor of Elephant Eater Comics, Paul Friedrich, George “Geo” Davis and Bill Robinson of Flimflammery. Elsewhere on the floor we were happy to spend some time with Cesare and Kirstie of Curio and Co. and see Daniel and Dawna of Steam Crow, both with amazing booth designs.

ChetArt will be represented at this year’s San Diego Comic Con in the Small Press Area, Booth O-01. “The Land of Kaiju” limited edition alphabet book, card sets and prints will be available. Darren Di Lieto’s latest effort: “Mail Me Art: Short & Sweet” brings together an array of talented artists willing to trust the postal service with delivery original pieces of work. The collection of entries will be showcased as a gallery show as well as in book form. The show will take place July 30th-August 3rd at The Framers Gallery in London. The book is in pre-order status with more info here. I’m proud to be included in Darren’s latest project and I’ve earmarked any profits from the sale of my piece to a local animal rescue organization in the London area.
Ryan Claytor, author and artist of the autobiographical comic book series, And Then One Day, has launched a crowd-funding campaign to print a compiled edition of his most recent story-arc on autobiographical theory, collectively titled, Autobiographical Conversations.
Ryan is a wonderfully talented artist and I’ve been honored to sell beside him in the Small Press area at San Diego’s Comic-Con for the last three years (and will again this July.) He has a well-deserved following, but could use even more support to fund this great project. Visit the IndieGoGo crowd funding link below to learn more and help him reach his goal.
Introducing Land of Kaiju, a collection of Japanese-styled monsters created by Chet Phillips. Kaiju translates to strange beast or monster and has a long and glorious history in pop culture and on the silver screen with the likes of Godzilla, Rodan, Gamera and Mothra, just to name a few. Chet Phillips explores this fascinating world of humongous mutants and irradiated creatures with his collection of whimsical beings that are part animal, part fantasy and all in-your-face fun. Available in a portfolio of trading cards, signed 11″ x 14″ prints and in a limited edition (50) alphabet book. The first 10 copies of the book edition include a beautiful custom Japanese box.
Land of Kaiju- The Portfolio of Trading Cards
24 cards in the set, each measuring a large 3.25″ x 4″ each.
Each pack of cards is presented in a paper portfolio (signed on the back) with gold foil stamp on the label and red “Chet” Haragani red stamp designed by Sachi Greene of StampsbySachi. The card front sides display the monster portrait with a distinct Japanese woodblock flavor and the reverse provides the point of origin along with physical characteristics and historical information of each creature. Each card measures 3.25″ x 4″ and are printed on sturdy 14 pt. uncoated cover stock.
26 monsters represent each letter of the alphabet with a clever twist. Using alliteration, the repetition of a particular sound, each creature’s description follows the pattern of the letter of the alphabet represented. For instance, for the letter D: “Diredragon dominates and destroys daredevil dandies with dark determination.” The book measures 9.75″ x 8.5.” Each copy of the edition is printed on heavy, bright white 48 lb cover stock, bound in a Japanese-styled binding design using beautiful Chiyogami paper and silk thread by Julie Sullivan of Dancing Cat Bindery.

With the third year of exhibiting at San Diego under our belt, we were proud to have our best year ever. The crowds were very responsive to the my new offerings and our stock of Simian Playing cards was depleted early on Saturday. We loved our new location at the end of the aisle and hope to make it our permanent home for the future. If you’ve never attended the event, it’s hard to describe the enormity of the exhibits hall. I’ve tried in the past to capture it with one photo, but it’s just too large. With so many sections representing different industries, the hall could be described as a country with individual states within. The Small Press area is certainly a world of its own with an seemingly endless well of creativity. The folks that inhabit it are passionate about what they do and eager to share with the world. I recorded the G-4 coverage of the event and, though I haven’t watched it through yet, I suspect as with previous years, Small Press didn’t make the cut among all the coverage of TV, film and other corporate giants. Truly a shame because that’s where so much of the inspiration springs forth. What follows is one last round of photos of various sections, some more fun costumes and a tribute to some new friends we had the pleasure of meeting in our area. Paperwork completed for 2013 and already anxious to return!
It’s almost time again for that most magical of events: San Diego’s International Comic Con. I’ll have a presence in the Small Press area again this year with an end-of-the-aisle spot–booth O-01. With Oni Press on one side and the super talented Dane Ault of Monkey Minion Press opposite, there will be tons of creative energy emanating from our little geek-sphere. Along with 9 different trading card sets and 4 limited edition books and signed prints, I’ll be displaying the new “Monkopolis” limited edition book, Simian Playing Card sets and the “Monkopolis” laser engraved wooden badges. This field guide of sorts presents a collection of 35 monkey and ape character portraits along with amusing and informative biographical information.
