San Diego Comic Con 2012- Wrap Up

With the third year of exhibiting at San Diego under our belt, we were proud to have our best year ever. The crowds were very responsive to the my new offerings and our stock of Simian Playing cards was depleted early on Saturday. We loved our new location at the end of the aisle and hope to make it our permanent home for the future. If you’ve never attended the event, it’s hard to describe the enormity of the exhibits hall. I’ve tried in the past to capture it with one photo, but it’s just too large. With so many sections representing different industries, the hall could be described as a country with individual states within. The Small Press area is certainly a world of its own with an seemingly endless well of creativity. The folks that inhabit it are passionate about what they do and eager to share with the world. I recorded the G-4 coverage of the event and, though I haven’t watched it through yet, I suspect as with previous years, Small Press didn’t make the cut among all the coverage of  TV, film and other corporate giants. Truly a shame because that’s where so much of the inspiration springs forth. What follows is one last round of photos of various sections, some more fun costumes and a tribute to some new friends we had the pleasure of meeting in our area. Paperwork completed for 2013 and already anxious to return!

Just a small part of the Acme Archives booth. Acme’s creative director Chris Jackson was curator of the Rayguns and Robots show in which I contributed two pieces and the show’s poster.

The J.J. Abrams Boilerplate movie is still in the works.

The League of S.T.E.A.M

The gentleman that was selling these Lucha Libre masks generously offered to display brochures advertising my Wrestle Pets book. He even displayed a tiny, cat sized mask to help drum up some business for me.

Marty dropped by the booth towards closing time to show off his incredible autographed hat. He works with our good friend Danna Kress over at Idea Planet.

Jeff Schuetze, a.k.a. Jefbot was just down the row from us, selling great stuff.

Across the main aisle at the Oni Press booth, Brahm Revel signed copies of his latest book: Guerillas Vol. 2. Wildly talented and monkeycentric. Who could ask for more?!

I had a great time discovering Reid Psaltis’ Hell’s Dachshunds, among his other great offerings.

Alongside Reid was Josh Shalek and his fantastic Falling Rock National Park. Great to have them both just down the aisle from us.

A couple of tables down from us was Flimflammery a.k.a. the incredibly talented Bill Robinson. His work is warm and inviting with loads of professional awesomeness. Standing next to Bill is the brilliant Mayka Mei. She was so kind to bring her Wrestle Pets book up into the photo.

(A small sample of Bill’s genius.)

We also were so pleased to see friends from past events, close by and in other areas:

Jason Rekulak of Quirk Press

Dane and Ashlie of Monkey Minion Press

Ryan Claytor of Elephant Eater Comics

Paul Friedrich

Paul and Darlene of Cool Jerk

We enjoyed a nice, end of the event dinner with our great friends from Austria, Cesare and Kirstie of Curio and Co.

Please visit all their sites and help support their efforts!

And a parting shot, offering an image of what it’s really all about.

  1. Thanks for all the great comments and support Steve! Come on down for a spin in the Batmobile I took off in. (Still trying to find a service that will pick up my bat turn parachutes.)

  2. Great wrap-up – nicely written and great pics, too! Very happy to hear it was the best year yet for you and Julie… and that you’ve signed up for next year’s ride.

  3. So glad this was such a success. You and Julie have worked so hard and you deserve the great show you had. I think that corner spot should be a permanent place for you. Thanks for sharing the experience with every one. It sounds like a really fun place to be. I know you are exhausted. Take time for a little rest.
