Arcade of the Gods- Hero Complex Gallery

ArcadeOfTheGods_ChetArt

~Signed Limited Edition Prints Available Here~

Hero Complex Gallery transforms into an arcade on December 5th with the show opening: “Gaming in the Gallery.” Half the gallery will have playable consoles like NES, Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, Atari 2600 and others and rounding out the room with classic cabinet games like Pacman, Space Invaders, Galaga and more.

My contribution to the show is a send up to K’inich Janaab’ Pakal’s famous Mayan sacophagus lid sculpture. Author Eric von Däniken postulated in his book “Chariots of the Gods” that the sculpture referenced ancient astronaut elements. My version transforms the Mayan ruler in an arcade game environment with several references to game characters.

Hero Complex Gallery presents the “Kung Fu Theater” (*not limited to Kung Fu) art show, opening November 14th. The show encompasses a variety of Asian themed pop culture imagery. I’ll have two pieces for the show: “Mystery Science Kabuki,” is a send up of Japanese printmaking and drama with Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot from Mystery Science Theater 3000 at center stage.

Both images now available as signed limited editions:

For my second piece I created a Godzilla themed image with a twist. Titled “The Kaiju Man,” it illustrates a story I wrote and incorporated into the piece about an actor transformed into a giant from nuclear radiation. He uses his new found abnormality to don enormous monster suits and act in Kaiju movies. This new career was cut short after the radiation’s second stage turned him into an actual Kaiju monster. His malevolent rampage was filmed in one last battle against the army in which he was ultimately destroyed.

Hero Complex Gallery- I Am The Law/Life of Crime

Bullitt500

Hero Complex Gallery presents the show “I Am The Law/A Life of Crime” opening Friday, August 15th. The show pays tribute to both cops and criminals across a wide spectrum of films and pop culture. My submission draws upon the fond memory of my first viewing of “Bullitt.” Director Peter Yates’ iconic car chase down the hills of San Francisco was beautifully choreographed. The sequence was highlighted by Steve McQueen’s ultra cool demeanor as he confidently glided his Mustang GT over the paved hills and valleys in pursuit of the hitmen in their Dodge Charger.

Available in the online shop HERE.

San Diego Comic Con 2014

ChetArtChetArt Booth in the Small Press Section

The 2014 San Diego Comic Con was a non-stop whirlwind of fun this year. With 4 hours of preview night on Wednesday and 4 full days through Sunday, we saw lots of familiar faces and made loads of new friends.

AssassinsCreed

We arrived on Tuesday. From the front door of our hotel was a view of the swaying palm trees, the Assassin’s Creed display being set up and the convention center in the background.

TerminusHilton

Our hotel was designated as Terminus. Fortunately there were no train box cars behind the hotel that we were led to after checking in.

TheBeachleft to right-Cesare, Kirstie, Julie and the Pacific

The day before set up we took the opportunity to meet up with our good friends from Curio and Co., Cesare and Kirstie. Heading over to Ocean Beach, we enjoyed a burger at Hodad’s before a leisurely stroll on the pier to view the sunset over the water.

Center

Attendance for the show maxes out at 130,000 and we saw our share of folks. Preview night started off strong for us. So strong we asked our neighbor and friend Jen Sorensen to ship us more product the next day. It was a good decision, as we would have sold all the “Childhood” books by Saturday if we hadn’t received her generous help.

Along with lots of sales, we had the pleasure of seeing long-time friends, fellow artists and loyal fans, topped with a surprise visit from April Winchell (who has no Regretsy(s) over retiring her wildly popular web site and concentrating on gracing us with her incredible voice work.) I was approached by several people with interest in some high profile projects. Stay tuned for those that may pan out in the coming months. Much to my surprise, my “Grumpy the Hutt” print that was purchased by our wonderful friend Jane Ezratty was then gifted to David Glanzer, the director of marketing and public relations for San Diego’s Comic Con International. The word came back to us that he considered it the best gift he’s received in ages. Here’s hoping it’ll fill a little bit of “NO!” on his wall somewhere. (A big thanks to Jane for gifting and Dustin Romero for passing along the news.)

Hero Complex Gallery, in collaboration with Trailers From Hell, presents an event honoring the work of film legends Roger Corman and Joe Dante.

From the “Kings of Cult” show page:

HCG is proud and honored to present this pop-art tribute to the two legendary directors and Trailers From Hell Gurus, Joe Dante and Roger Corman. All artwork in the show will pay tribute to the entire body of work of both directors.

This tribute will begin with a double feature screening at The New Beverly Cinema of Joe Dante’s Matinee (1993) and Roger Corman’s The Masque of the Red Death (1964) on May 23rd at 7:30pm. Joe Dante and Roger Corman will be in attendance for a Q&A prior to the show along with other special guests.

The events will continue the next night at Hero Complex Gallery for the opening of the Kings of Cult exhibit, on Saturday May 24th at 7pm. Joe Dante and Roger Corman will be in attendance. Original props from their classic films will be on exhibit as well.

My two contributions honor Joe Dante with “Gremlins” and for Roger Corman, “The Pit and the Pendulum.” I saw Mr. Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe inspired film as a kid. Vincent Price’s speech at the end of the movie before the pendulum was put in motion was the essence of pure madness and horror.
